‘Raceway’s $11m upgrade worth every cent’

BLAIR MP Shayne Neumann turned out for the 56th Winternationals as the drag racing championships fired up recently.

Mr Neumann was there to show off how successful the Australian Government’s $11 million upgrade funding had proved to be.

Flanked by Regional Development Minister Anthony Chisholm, Mr Neumann said: “The funding has helped the raceway to continue every year to attract thousands of people to world-class events like this.

“Ipswich people love their motorsport and Willowbank Raceway has been contributing to the local community since 1980s.

“It’s a fantastic asset and these vital upgrades ensure it remains Australia’s top drag strip destination for years to come.”

Willowbank hosts 100,000 spectators and 12,000 race competitors annually.

New trackside features include a 250m racing track, 600m braking area, an upgraded track exit and improved drainage to the track and surrounding area.

The facility and infrastructure upgrade also involved renovating five existing amenities facilities, adding six new multi-function demountable buildings, as well as constructing a new effluent management system.

Track lighting and electrical upgrades were also installed, including two electrical boards, 27 new lighting poles and new track lighting.

Ongoing operations at the raceway are set to generate a further $7.86 million.

The project supported 229 jobs during construction and has created another eight continuing positions.

“These upgrades will ensure the vast number of race competitors and spectators the Willowbank Raceway attracts can safely enjoy the over 100 events that take place each year at the venue,” Senator Chisholm said.
