Disadvantaged young jobseekers get skills

ELEVEN jobseekers in Bundamba have successfully completed a Certificate II in Retail Services through a skills and training initiative.

The Retail Services graduates took part in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative at yourtown at Redbank Plains.

The initiative focuses on helping disadvantaged individuals secure employment through training and support.

The Certificate II in Retail Services provides students with skills for a retail environment and allows employers to have access to a qualified, skilled and job-ready workforce.

Training and Skills Development Minister Lance McCallum said the program was vital to ensure the most vulnerable people could get a job.

“For many, this will be the first formal qualification they’ll have ever gotten, and for some their very first job,” he said.

Amy, who took part in the course said she “wasn’t mature … [and] didn’t know how to catch public transport, but now I’m able to get around myself and am more responsible”.

“Get Set for Work got me a Cert II, my Prep L and RSA and there is no way I could ever do those things on my own.

“The only thing on my mind was getting a job but I had no idea how and was way too shy.

“Now I’m not scared to talk to people.

“A big part of this has been the program. You don’t know the things that you can do until you give it a try.”

Applications for the second funding round for 2024-25 are now open, and will close on September 19.
